The county seat is Bellefonte. The county was established 1800.

About Centre County: It was formed on February 13, 1800, as the result of "an act erecting parts of Mifflin, Northumberland, Lycoming and Huntingdon into a separate county" and calling it Centre. The county, of course, was named for its geographic location, but the exact geographical center of the state is in dispute. There was a sign on Greenland's store in Aaronsburg that staked its claim, but other sites around the county do so as well. The Centre County courthouse is at Bellefonte. The county is home to State College and Penn State University as well as Boalsburg, which claims to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. And Centre Hall is home of the Grange Fair which is often billed as the biggest of Centre County's family reunions.
